Follow travel warnings for safe travel

I would never dream of trying to discourage the more intrepid travelling types from visiting exotic destinations but surely even the most courageous backpackers would recognise the importance of following travel warnings to ensure safe travel.

After all, it’s all very well deciding you would like to hitch-hike naked through Afghanistan and ignoring travel warnings to the contrary, but if US Marines end up risking their lives to rescue you – at huge expense to the taxpayer – your cavalier attitude to safe travel can seem a lot less attractive to others.

But that is not to say that you should let travel warnings – like the Australian government’s smart traveller service -entirely dictate your choice of destination. Safe travel need not mean boring travel and bear in mind websites and companies – and particularly governments – that issue travel warnings and safe travel advice will always err on the side of extreme caution, for a variety of reasons.

Travel warnings are not psychic – think about Birmingham’s safe travel concerns

The other point to bear in mind is that travel warnings can never predict which countries can turn violent – I’ve found myself visiting Birmingham in the UK in the past and anyone who has read the headlines coming out of Britain recently will have thought little of the safe travel implications of visiting the Second City before it erupted into flames.

Once you have had a look at the travel warnings – and your travel guide – you are usually able to make an informed decision on the safe travel implications. For instance, nothing would tempt me to venture into any corner of Afghanistan right now but I would certainly be prepared to visit Iran or Pakistan, as long as I thoroughly researched which areas to avoid in advance.

But bear in mind that travel warnings are there for a reason and should never be ignored completely – use them as a starting point to find out more about your proposed destination. In most cases you will find that that trip to Syria or even the Yemen is a perfectly possible feat, provided you always bear in mind safe travel considerations.
